Henderson Recognizes “Black History in the Making” Through February 28

Henderson, Nev. – In honor of the rich history of African Americans in Henderson as well as those who are currently helping to make our community premier, the City is hosting a virtual Black History Month celebration through February. The program is featured on the City’s social media platforms including its YouTube channel, where participants can view videos highlighting local African American poets, business leaders, dancers, medical professionals, singers, and painters.

Developed in partnership with Vogue Robinson, former Clark County Poet Laureate, and the Henderson Libraries, which generously hosted the recording of featured artists at their Paseo Verde location, this year’s Black History Month programming celebrates the impact of Black Americans in Henderson. Henderson locals highlighted include Peter and Maureen Finch, early business leaders who owned an auto repair shop in the1950s. The program also showcases living artists, business owners, and organizers like artist and gallery owner Joseph Watson.

“We want to acknowledge the past and support the future,” said Brian Kendall, Recreation Services manager for the City. “Each step, each accomplishment in the present, creates history for future generations and we’re excited to bring these outstanding individuals to the public’s attention.”

This first-time virtual program was developed in response to the COVID-19 safety restrictions that forced the cancelation of the City’s annual Heart & Soul event. Additional information on Black History in Henderson can be viewed on Henderson’s Facebook, and Instagram platforms.
