Adoption of the Lakemoor Canyon Redevelopment Area occurred in January 2009. The area encompasses the former Three Kids Mine and totals 1,259 acres. Most of the land is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation while approximately 300 acres are privately owned.

Located just five miles from downtown Henderson, the Three Kids Mine is a former open pit mine and mill site that produced manganese for the U.S. government between 1917 and 1961. The site is currently being restored and redeveloped for residential use.

The Three Kids Mine Remediation and Reclamation Act of 2014 authorizes the transfer of the federal land to the City of Henderson Redevelopment Agency. As part of an agreement with the City of Henderson Redevelopment Agency, Lakemoor Ventures, LLC will remediate the site in order to develop a master-planned community.

Remediation of the mine site will be funded by private investors that will be reimbursed by future property taxes generated by the homes to be developed. The arrangement could serve as a public-private model for the cleanup of similar federal mine sites across the country.
