The Southern Nevada desert is an environment of extremes and although we typically think of the desert as being hot and dry, we can and do experience freezing winter temperatures as well as intense rainfall events that can occur any time of the year.

Flooding can strike without warning any time there has been a large volume of rainfall.

Many residents and visitors are unaware of the flood potential or never see flooding occur until it is too late. The City of Henderson is dedicated to providing our citizens and visitors with the information they need to make informed, safe choices when preparing for and dealing with flooding.

The City of Henderson Public Works Department is responsible for many of the city's floodplain management responsibilities, including planning, review of new development, storm drain and channel system maintenance, flood emergency response, storm water quality and public education.

The Public Works Department has dedicated staff that are assigned to floodplain-management related tasks. These employees work in the Support Services, Engineering, and Land Development divisions. Seven of the department's employees are Certified Floodplain Managers.

The City of Henderson works with federal, state, and local government agencies to ensure Henderson residents can obtain flood insurance at the lowest possible rates. Employing Certified Floodplain Managers and membership and participation in the National Flood Insurance Program are just two of the many steps the city takes to serve and protect its citizens.
