Explorer Post #920

The Henderson Police Explorer Program is an educational program designed for students aged 16 to 20 with an avid interest in law enforcement. Explorers meet once a week, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the West Henderson Police Station at 300 S. Green Valley Parkway for training sessions in law enforcement activities and are not paid. Due to the extensive training the Explorers are given with the goal of preparing each student for a career in Law Enforcement, enrollment is open only twice per year.

Its mission is to offer young adults, 16 years old and not yet 21 years old, a personal awareness of the criminal justice system through training, practical experiences, competition, and other activities. Additionally, the program promotes personal growth through character development, respect for the rule of law, physical fitness, good citizenship and patriotism.

What We Do

Explorer Post #920 trains in various aspects of law enforcement. Department employees teach explorer training, and the training offered is similar to Law Enforcement Academy training. There are requirements to conduct public services and opportunities to assist with police related functions. Explorers are required to perform public service.

There are occasions when the Explorer Post will engage other Posts in competitions. These are special events that require additional training and time requirements of the Explorers. These events are challenging and require hard work, but are very rewarding to the Explorers as individuals and a team.

Subjects include:

  • Arrest control
  • Traffic control
  • Criminal code
  • Patrol procedures
  • Hostage negotiation
  • High-risk entry
  • Domestic crisis
  • Report writing
  • Firearms safety
  • Crime scene investigation

Requirements for Membership

Explorer candidates must:

  • Currently enrolled in high school or college, in good standing
  • Pass a background investigation
  • Have written permission from a parent/guardian if the applicant is under 18 years of age

Explorers neither possess nor wear a badge. Explorers are not law enforcement officers and are not POST-certified.

Application Process
