Douglas Hedger was elected city of Henderson Municipal Court Judge, Department 2, in April 2003 and re-elected in April 2009 and April 2015. Judge Hedger was elected as Chief Judge in February 2004 and again in January 2006. His daily court calendars include criminal arraignments, criminal trials, in-custody arraignments, adult traffic arraignments and traffic trials.
In January 2004, Judge Hedger launched Legal Minds, an educational program where Henderson students gain firsthand insight into the legal system by observing actual court proceedings, touring the Henderson Municipal Court facility, and learning about court operations and personnel. Over 5000 students have attended the Legal Minds program. He implemented the A.B.C. Court (Assistance in Breaking the Cycle) in April 2008, an alternative sentencing program to address habitual misdemeanor offenders with co-occurring disorders.
Before his election, Judge Hedger served as a Chief Deputy Public Defender for Clark County from 2001 to 2003 and Deputy Public Defender from 1990 to 2001, during which time he was a member of the Capital Defense Team from 1998 to 2001.
Judge Hedger is a current member of the Clark County, Nevada State and American Bar Associations; the Nevada Judges of Limited Jurisdiction and American Judges Associations. In addition, Judge Hedger serves as an instructor for the National Drug Court Institute.
Judge Hedger is a former member of the Legislative, Education and Bench Book Committees with the Nevada Judges of Limited Jurisdiction Association and the Supreme Court Specialty Court Funding Committee. He also served on the Nevada State College Criminal Justice Program Advisory Committee, the Nevada Supreme Court Committee to Develop Statewide Data Collection for Nevada’s Problem Solving Courts and as an oral argument judge for the American Bar Association Moot Court Competition. Formerly he was an Adjunct Associate Professor – Medical Jurisprudence with Touro University Nevada. He also has volunteered as a youth basketball and soccer coach.
Judge Hedger graduated from Arizona State University College of Law in 1990 after earning a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Brigham Young University in 1987.
