The City of Henderson promotes safe, active lifestyles. As part of our effort, the City has teamed with the Clark County School District, the Nevada Department of Transportation, Southern Nevada Health District, and Communities Putting Prevention to Work, to create Safe Routes to School.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is an international program to encourage safe walking and bicycling to and from schools. SRTS is based on six principles, the “6 E’s“: Education, Encouragement, Engagement, Engineering, Evaluation, and Equity. Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs are sustained efforts by parents, schools, community leaders and local, state, and federal governments to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to school, and to do so safely.

Desired outcomes of the SRTS Program include:

  • Increased bicycle, pedestrian, and traffic safety
  • More children walking and bicycling to and from schools
  • Decreased traffic congestion
  • Improved childhood health
  • Reduced childhood obesity
  • Encouragement of healthy and active lifestyles
  • Improved air quality
  • Improved community safety
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Increased community security
  • Enhanced community accessibility
  • Increased community involvement
  • Improvements to the physical environment that increase the ability to walk and bicycle to and from schools
  • Improved partnerships among schools, local municipalities, parents, and other community groups, including non-profit organizations
  • Increased interest in bicycle and pedestrian accommodations throughout a community
