The award-winning City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is accredited through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and is committed to providing residents with a variety of life-enriching classes, workshops and events. These programs are hosted at 72 neighborhood and community parks, 11 aquatic facilities, and eight recreation centers (including two centers for adults 50+).

Accreditation

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department has been reaccredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) for the third time, making it the only agency in Nevada to hold this prestigious designation and one of only 189 CAPRA accredited agencies in the United States.

Through compliance with 36 fundamental and 118 non-fundamental standards of excellence, CAPRA accreditation assures policy makers, department staff, and the public that an accredited park and recreation agency has been independently evaluated against established benchmarks as delivering a high level of quality. The City of Henderson demonstrated 100 percent compliance with all 154 standards.

Gold Medal Award

The City of Henderson received the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) in 2014 and 1999. The Gold Medal Award honors park and recreation agencies throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long‐range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and agency recognition. Each agency is judged on its ability to address the needs of those it serves through the collective energies of citizens, staff, and elected officials.

The City of Henderson is proud to announce the Parks and Recreation Department has been named a finalist for the 2023 Gold Medal Award. As part of the application process, the City was required to submit a five-minute video highlighting our programs and services.

Master Plan

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Master Plan assists the City in planning for the future growth of the Henderson parks system and recreational facilities over the next ten years. The master plan is a critical component of the development of future parks, trails, facilities, programs, and services consistent with the vision and policies of the City of Henderson.

Professional Biography

Shari Ferguson

Shari Ferguson was named director in August 2018 after serving as assistant director since 2011. In her capacity as director, she plans, directs, and coordinates the operations of the City's Parks, Recreation and Park Planning divisions. She is responsible for a $40M parks and recreation operation which includes 65 parks, 180+ miles of trails, six recreation centers and two senior centers, 191 full-time staff and 600-1,000 part-time staff depending on the time of year.

Prior to joining City of Henderson, Shari worked as regional manager for Collier County, FL Parks and Recreation.

Shari graduated from University of Ottawa, Canada in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and from Hodges University in 2009 with a Master of Public Administration. She is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional through National Recreation and Park Association.
