hazardous materials teamHenderson Fire's Hazardous Materials Response Team was launched in January 2016 and is based at Station 98. The HazMat Team is categorized as Type Three, meaning it is equipped and firefighters are trained to handle all known industrial chemical hazards in liquid, aerosol, powder and solid forms. The department is moving toward Type Two with the future addition of specialized equipment and apparatus, allowing personnel to identify and mitigate unknown chemical hazards.

Each shift has 10 department personnel at the Hazardous Materials Technician Level, trained to control and mitigate hazardous materials incidents, and able to take offensive action to plug, patch or otherwise stop the release of a hazardous substance. Technicians use specialized chemical protective clothing and equipment.

All Henderson firefighters are trained to the Hazardous Materials Operations Level, allowing them to take defensive action to protect nearby persons and property outside the contamination zone. Their primary focus is to contain the release from a safe distance, keep it from spreading and prevent exposures.

Type One hazards such as weapons of mass destruction and explosives are handled regionally by Las Vegas Fire & Rescue's CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive) unit.
