Henderson Honors its History with ‘Magnesium Maggie’ Debut Recognizing Local Women’s WWII Contributions

Post Date:03/20/2023 1:19 PM

WHAT:

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the City of Henderson will debut its newest art installation on Thursday, March 23, honoring Magnesium Maggie, a nickname given to a group of hardworking women who played a critical role in the magnesium industry during World War II.

Magnesium Maggies were trailblazing women who worked as machinists at the Basic Magnesium Plant in Henderson and drove forklifts, handled ingots, operated machinery, and worked over molten metal.

Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero and Assistant City Manager Stephanie Garcia-Vause will be joined by McCaw STEAM Academy Mighty Miner Student Ambassadors and Clark County Poet Laureate Angela M. Brommel, who will recite a Magnesium Maggie poem at the ceremony.

The Swing it! Girls, a vintage vocal trio, will also perform sounds of the 1940s to celebrate and welcome Magnesium Maggie.
