Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero Fights Childhood Hunger Through National Alliance

Post Date:04/11/2024 12:14 PM

HENDERSON, Nev. (April 11, 2024) – Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero recently joined the Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger, a nonpartisan coalition of more than 300 other mayors across the country combating food insecurity.

Since joining the Alliance, Mayor Romero has participated in the following achievements in Henderson over the past year:

• Provided more than 34,000 servings of milk and snacks through the Special Milk Program in the Henderson Safekey after-school program
• Served almost 26,000 meals to Henderson youth through the Meet Up and Eat Up Program in the Battle Born Kids Summer camp
• Served almost 9,000 meals (to date) to Henderson youth through the Meet Up and Eat Up Program in the 2023-24 school year at City recreation centers
• Opened Henderson’s first community garden at Pumpkin Park, where program attendees learn how to plant, tend, and harvest fruits and vegetables from trained Garden Farms staff

“Hunger, especially for a child, can be devastating. Not having enough to eat lessens a child’s ability to learn, impacts behavioral problems and can even impede growth and development,” said Mayor Michelle Romero. “Through our school and community garden projects and other initiatives, our City staff and community leaders are committed to ending childhood hunger and food insecurity in Henderson.”

The group comprised of mayors from all 50 states and the District of Columbia taps the individual and collective leadership of mayors to take meaningful action to end childhood hunger in cities nationwide.

The Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger is a partner of the national nonprofit Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign. The coalition formed in 2022 after seeing the devastating effects the COVID-19 pandemic had on childhood hunger – as well as the tactics employed by leaders at the state, local and national level to combat food insecurity.

In the United States, nearly 11 million children live in families considered food insecure, according to the Alliance. In Southern Nevada, almost 300,000 experience food insecurity, according to Three Square Food Bank.
