Henderson Police Department’s Sergeant Abernathy Honored with 2020 Law Enforcement Public Servant Award

Henderson, NV – The City of Henderson today announced that Sergeant Kevin M. Abernathy, a medal of valor recipient in the Henderson Police Department, received the 2020 Law Enforcement Public Servant Award presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of America (VFW) - Department of Nevada during a ceremony at Henderson’s Purple Heart Plaza on Wednesday, March 30, 2021.
“On behalf of the City of Henderson, I want to share how proud we are of Sergeant Kevin Abernathy, who is one of the 50 top officers in the US being honored this year by the VFW,” said Mayor Debra March. “This well-deserved acknowledgement of his superior service and contribution to our community is a testament to Sergeant Abernathy’s commitment to the sacred oath he took to help ensure public safety in our premier city.”
Sergeant Abernathy’s nomination for the Law Enforcement Award was made by VFW Post 983 in Henderson NV and forwarded to the VFW Department of Nevada for consideration.  State Commander Henry Beltran and Chairman of the VFW Nevada Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee Carlton Fogg, Jr. presented the award to Sergeant Abernathy, who was recognized for consistent excellence in the performance of his duties, continued growth in responsibilities and skills and recognition by his colleagues.  Additionally, during the selection process, significant consideration was given to Sergeant Abernathy’s bravery as he placed himself in harm’s way to protect his fellow officers in an officer-involved shooting.
Mayor Debra March, VFW State Commander Henry Beltran, VFW Post 983 Commander Robert Zentz and Carlton Fogg, Jr, Chairman of the VFW Nevada Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee were among those in attendance.
