Take a look at our 2024 Sustainability Report Card to see how we are doing our part in protecting our region's valuable and natural resources. We've been working hard on different initiatives, campaigns, and partnerships to reduce the impact of climate change, and we are seeing great progress in ensuring our City stays resilient for future generations.

Even as our City grows, we've managed to reduce emissions, conserve resources, and improve the quality of life for our residents. Our turf conversion projects alone have saved 13.8 million gallons of water every year since 2022. And we're continuing our commitment to water conservation through our newly launched H2One campaign, Henderson's Call to Conserve. We're also ensuring equitable mobility and park access by adding 113 miles of street bike lanes within our community and increasing the number of residents within a 10-minute walk to 75%.

We've achieved a lot, but we're not stopping here. We'll keep working to make sure Henderson remains healthy and thriving for years to come.

CLIMATE INITIATIVES AND PARTNERSHIPS

As a community located in the beautiful Mojave Desert, we understand that our ability to flourish means that we need to conserve our resources and protect our climate from drought and extreme heat. Over the last several years, the City has developed initiatives, campaigns and partnerships aimed at reducing the impacts of climate change and making Henderson more sustainable.

The City of Henderson has adopted the new Healthy, Livable and Sustainable City priority in the 2024-2027 strategic plan, including developing the Climate Response Initiative.

CLEAN AND RELIABLE ENERGY

The City of Henderson completed a greenhouse gas inventory of emissions from its municipal operations during 2022 to compare against the original inventory in 2020 and the baseline condition in 2005. The City has seen an overall decrease in total carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in comparison to previous reporting years. As Henderson expands, the areas served by City operations will also grow. Some categories, such as streetlights, fleet, and solid waste saw slight total increases overall. While the City continues to improve efficiency, there are more roads and parks to maintain, along with more wastewater to treat, each year.

What you can do:

Use Energy Star Products.
Seal and insulate your house.
Use a smart thermostat.
Use energy efficient light bulbs.
Use solar power and install solar panels if possible.

SUSTAINABLE WATER SYSTEMS

Several efforts such as reducing water waste, municipal code changes, incentives, and recognition programs have helped to conserve water and the City’s water consumption decreased in 2023. Estimates for the 2023 overall water consumption is a reduction of approximately 5% which equates to more than one billion gallons in water savings. A decrease in City, commercial, and residential water use is reflective of the positive impact of grass removal on water conservation.

What you can do:

Repair water leaks and install a smart leak detector.
Install a smart irrigation controller.
Remove non-functional grass:

- City of Henderson has a supplemental rebate program for residents.
Take your car to a commercial car wash
- Find car wash coupons at Water Smart Car Wash coupons.
Use water efficient water fixtures
- Commercial and multifamily properties may receive financial incentives through SNWA’s Water Efficient Technologies (WET) program.

SMART BUILDINGS AND DEVELOPMENT

The City was awarded Gold Certification in the LEED for Cities and Communities
rating system—an international symbol of excellence recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED for Cities and Communities helps local leaders measure and manage progress in community conditions, in pursuit of a more sustainable, resilient and equitable future. Through the certification program, cities and communities create and operationalize responsible, sustainable, and specific plans for natural systems, energy, water, waste, transportation, and many other factors that contribute to quality of life.

What you can do:

The City’s Building code has sustainable building codes for Water Conservation and Efficiency and Energy Efficiency.
C-PACE is designed to help qualifying commercial, industrial, and multifamily (with five or more units) property owners access long-term financing for the installation of qualifying energy efficiency, water efficiency, renewable energy, and resiliency projects.
C-PACE is also available to commercial real estate developers who design and construct new buildings.

RESILIENT AND HEALTHY COMMUNITY

The City prides itself on its commitment to provide residents and visitors with award-winning parks and trails. Our City parks were ranked #19 of the 100 most populated U.S. cities according to the Trust for Public Land’s ParkScore index. The ranking is based on a survey of 525 cities and measures how well they are meeting the community’s need for parks. The Trust’s ParkScore index is the national gold standard for the comparison of park systems in the nation. Published annually, the index measures park systems according to five categories: access, investment, amenities, acreage, and equity.

What you can do:

Plant drought tolerant plants and tress to help reduce heat island effect.
Enjoy a park for a bike ride, walk or sports activity!

CONNECTED AND EQUITABLE MOBILITY

The City continues to test and implement more efficient technology to make traffic and signals more efficient in managing traffic flow resulting in reduced traffic delays and congestion, improved travel time reliability, decreased vehicle emissions and improved safety for motorists. One of the major areas of opportunity in the City’s strategic plan is ensuring a high-quality, multimodal transportation network.

What you can do:

Consider an electric vehicle. Use NVEnergy’s EV Estimate tool to learn how much money and gas you may save. See where you can charge your EV using the Electric Vehicle Charging Station Locations map
Ride your bike to brunch, the bank or other errands to get some exercise, fresh air and reduce your vehicle driving
Join RTC’s Club Ride program, report your ride and potentially win a prize for using alternate transportation
