Household Hazardous Wastes includes the following: 

• Paint

• Drain & Oven Cleaners

• Adhesives

• Batteries

These household hazardous wastes can be disposed of at Republic Services Household Hazardous Waste Drop off locations. For a list of drop off locations and items that that are not accepted go to  Republic Services Website.

Other Places to Dispose of Materials

Light Bulbs & Batteries: Residents can throw incandescent light bulbs and batteries (not automotive) in the trash. However, incandescent or florescent (not tube) light bulbs and batteries can also be taken to select Home Depot or Lowe’s, free of charge, to be recycled. Call your neighborhood store, before you go to verify.

Used oil can also be taken to select AutoZones and Pep Boys, free of charge, to be recycled.

Never discharge chlorinated pool water to the gutter. The same chemicals that prevent algae from growing in your pool can poison plants and fish in Lake Mead. Per COH Municipal Code 14.14.100:

•  Drain your pool to your sanitary sewer cleanout

• If your home is on a septic tank, dechlorinate water before draining your pool to the gutter.

Identify what kind of smoke detector you have.

There are two general types of smoke detectors: ionization, which contain a small amount of the radioactive material Americium 241, and photoelectric, which do not contain any radioactive material. If you have an ionization smoke detector, the small amount of Americium 241 is not harmful to human health but it still needs to be properly disposed of. Smoke detectors with radioactive material are required by law to have a warning label, generally on the back of the detector facing the mounting base.

Contact the manufacturer of your smoke detector to find out if they offer a free or low cost take-back program.

Before disposal remove any batteries and recycle them. If you have an end of life photoelectric or ionization smoke detector and the manufacturer does not have a take back program you can place the smoke detector in the trash.

Paint brushes, rollers, pans and buckets used with latex paints can be washed out in a household sink. Painting supplies used with oil-based paints should be cleaned in a separate container and wash water should be placed in a leak proof container. Do not pour leftover paint or pour wash water down the drain, or into the gutter. Dispose of it at one of Republic Services Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Locations.

Illegal dumping of solid waste (garbage) should be reported to the Southern Nevada Health District at SNHD Solid Waste/Illegal Dumping Complaint Form.

Waste poured in gutters or storm drains or waste left at a City of Henderson facility, such as a park, should be reported to Contact Henderson.

During rain events, stormwater runoff can carry not only pet waste but pollutants such as oils/grease, fertilizers, pesticides, cigarette butts, sediment and other chemicals into City of Henderson’s storm drains. Stormwater runoff is not treated at a wastewater treatment plant. Once polluted stormwater runoff enters a storm drain it is conveyed to the Las Vegas Wash and ultimately Lake Mead. Pet waste is harmful because it contributes to bacteria loading which may result in algae formation in Lake Mead and water quality deterioration.

No, as it will clog the sewer line and cause a sewage backup. During the holiday season, drop-off locations for used cooking oil are set up at locations throughout the valley. Any time of year, used oil can be poured in a leak-proof glass jar or soaked up with cat litter and disposed of it in the garbage, or taken to Republic Services Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Locations.

No. Not all medication concentrations are removed by the cleaning process of a waste water treatment plant. Medication concentrations may then end up in Lake Mead and although the medication concentrations may be low, their presence may still cause an adverse effect to the water quality, aquatic life, and to human health.

Medication can be disposed of in the following ways:

• Find a medicine take back program or a disposal station.
• Drug Disposal | Drug Disposal Locator Tool | Medication Disposal (safe.pharmacy)
• Police Station Disposal (excluding COH)
• DEA Medication take back. Occurs every April and October (4th or 5th Saturday of the month). Find out more at Take Back Day (dea.gov)
• Dispose in household trash

 

First, check with your pharmaceutical company to see if they offer a mail-back program. For additional information go to SafeNeedleDisposal.org Mail-Back & Container Program.

If no mail-back program is offered, place used needles / syringes in a strong plastic container such as a laundry detergent bottle. Seal the lid with duct-tape and place in the trash. Do not recycle. Do not use milk or water containers as they are not typically puncture resistant.

Regulations applying to construction and building renovation and demolition of asbestos material were established by the Environmental Protection Agency. In Southern Nevada, Clark County Department of Environment & Sustainability Division of Air Quality (DAQ) regulates these regulations.

Materials such as asbestos cement pipe, asbestos siding or asbestos tiles were historically used for utility infrastructure, fire proofing and building material. Only a licensed asbestos contractor, licensed by the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration, may perform asbestos removal. DAQ’s Asbestos Forms website has asbestos checklists and offers quick guides for commercial, rental and condominium properties.

Compressed flammable gas cylinders include but are not limited to BBQ propane tanks, camp stove tanks, portable heater tanks, etc. To dispose of a propane tank, return it to the vendor. If this is not an option, Republic Services will collect it as part of their residential household hazardous waste program.

If the tank is empty, another option is to safely remove the valve and bring it to Nevada Recycling. If the tank still contains propane, Blue Rhino and Vegas Propane will accept it.
