Drowning Prevention
Rad Tad Travels
Drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for young children in Southern Nevada. Rad Tad Travels is our water safety program committed to educating adults and children about the importance of water safety in a fun and engaging way through presentations and events. We use the Three P’s as an easy way to remember key points about water safety:
Patrol
Always designate an adult to supervise children while they are in the water. Supervisors must actively watch children any time they are in or near the water, which includes pools, bathtubs, or other bodies of water.
Protect
Install barriers between your home and pool to ensure safety and prevent children from falling into the water, along with keeping them from entering the pool without adult permission and supervision. Examples of barriers are fences, door alarms, locks, and spa safety covers. Also lock doggie doors so children can’t crawl through them.
Prepare
Prepare children and others for emergencies that happen in and near the water. Make sure to create a water safety plan for your family, enroll children in swim lessons, take adult CPR classes, and equip your pool with proper safety equipment that includes life jackets, personal flotation devices, and rescue tools. Make sure children know how and when to call 9-1-1, as well as any information they’d need to share with EMS in an emergency.
The City of Henderson offers a wide variety of safety training classes: Water Safety Swim Clinic, Henderson Swim Academy, as well as CPR and other first-aid related classes that can help prepare your family for when they are in or around the water.
To sign up for swim lessons or any of our safety training classes, see the current issue of Henderson Happenings for more information.
